Odoo Community vs Enterprise: which one should you choose?
Choose Odoo Enterprise if you want full accounting, Studio, the mobile app and upgrades handled by Odoo; choose Odoo Community if your needs are mainly sales, purchase, inventory, CRM and invoicing and you have a partner for hosting, backups and extra modules. Both share the same core; the difference lies in advanced features, service and cost model. Here is an honest comparison.
Two editions, one core
- Community: free and open source under the LGPL v3 licence. The code is public; you can install it anywhere and modify it.
- Enterprise: paid per user per month. It adds apps and features on top of Community, plus hosting, support and upgrades by Odoo.
An Enterprise database is a Community database with extra modules. That is why you can move from one to the other.
What Enterprise adds

| Studio (no-code customisation) | No | Yes |
| Official mobile app | No (browser) | Yes |
| Odoo.sh and Odoo Online hosting | No | Yes |
| Upgrade to the next version by Odoo | No | Yes |
| Support from Odoo | No | Yes |
| Advanced apps (sign, planning, field service, payroll…) | No | Yes |
What Community does very well
For a trading or manufacturing SME, Community already covers a lot: quotes, orders, invoices, purchasing, multi-warehouse inventory with barcodes, CRM, a basic website and shop, simple manufacturing. What is missing is completed with modules: community modules (OCA), apps from the official store, or custom modules.
The hidden costs of Community
Community is free, but not cost-free:
- hosting: a server, its maintenance and security;
- backups: to organise and check yourself (see automatic Odoo backups);
- upgrades: a new version every year; migrating a Community database relies on community tools and work on your modules (see migrating an Odoo module);
- extra modules for what Enterprise offers out of the box.
Comparing over three years
Take an SME with 10 users. Licences: zero for Community, the per-user price × 10 × 36 months for Enterprise (check Odoo’s current official pricing). Implementation and configuration cost the same. Community needs hosting, a few modules and budgeted upgrades; Enterprise includes them depending on the plan. Beyond 15 to 20 users, Community with a few modules is often significantly cheaper; with few users and a strong need for accounting and Studio, Enterprise is often simpler. Module pricing is detailed in how much a custom Odoo module costs.
What about Studio?
Studio is often what tips the balance toward Enterprise. In Community there is an alternative: our Ramira Studio apps, published on the official Odoo store, bring the PDF report editor, labels, Word templates, custom fields and access rules. See a Studio for Odoo Community and our Odoo apps page.
How to decide
- List your processes: sales, inventory, accounting, manufacturing, field work.
- Note what Community does alone and what needs a module.
- Count your real users, today and in three years.
- Decide who does the accounting: you in Odoo, or your accountant in their own software (see exporting Odoo entries to your accountant).
- Compare both full quotes over three years.
In short
Enterprise brings comfort and service, Community brings freedom and controlled cost when well supported. Both are good choices; what matters is solid configuration. We work with both editions: see our Odoo implementation offer or tell us about your project.
FAQ
Can I move from Community to Enterprise later?
Yes. Enterprise installs on top of Community and the database is kept. Going back the other way is harder, because Enterprise modules and their data must be removed.
Can I do my accounting in Odoo Community?
Community includes invoicing and basic accounting features. Full accounting (advanced reconciliation, reports, returns) is in Enterprise; in Community it is completed with community modules or by exporting entries to your accountant.
Is Odoo Studio available in Community?
No, Studio is Enterprise-only. In Community, screens are customised through custom modules or apps such as Ramira Studio, which we publish on the official Odoo store.
